Today, the California Supreme Court overturned the state’s ban on same-gender marriage, meaning that same-gender marriage is now legal there. Indiana’s State Supreme Court will someday see a case like this one, and when they do, they have precedent. The march of tolerance is not inevitable, but momentum is building. In a week in which a Ball State student was attacked for his sexuality, we Hoosiers should see two things: we have much work to do, and it can be done.
What are your thoughts?
I don’t really know much about this debate but I thought you might be interested in the opinion of a homosexual Christian (legally partnered in Germany) whose blog I read. He’s not sure this is “the best way forward”. He prefers civil unions and Germany’s incremental approach.
I heard on the way to class. My mom’s best friend and her partner called me. A happy day. Fingers crossed. No take-backsies…
Jeremy: I’ve heard that argument before. But I think what our states need to do regarding marriage is, in some ways, more about straight people than gay people. We need to be dignified enough human beings to extend to all persons the same rights we want for ourselves. Perhaps some homosexuals would choose not to take part. We still need to get it done to create an equitable society.
Kara: We need to pass some sort of no take-backsies official policy on decisions like this. The Terminator says he won’t support a constitutional ban, so that’s a good thing.
